How to Lead Change in your Organization

Leadership becomes a challenge when you've got to change things in your organization. So, how is this done? I've got a few principles that can help free your mind on the issue.

1. Let people trust in your leadership first.

Nothing is worse than new leaders stepping foot in an organization without having a pre-established trust. Be sure to gain trust before you go trying to make a whole lot of changes. Otherwise, you'll get burned.

2. Don't wait too long to introduce change.

Once you believe you have their trust, get on the ball and start with some changes. Roll with the punches. Do what you can and when you can do it.

3. Keep people informed along the way.

Communication is very important. So, keep in the mind the people that are going to be helping changing some things, and the people that are affected by it. It's very important to communicate all plans, progress, and other issues along the way.

4. Have others help with the change.

If you're the only leader, don't go solo. Try to get someone else to help, as this will speed things up and avoid confusion.

5. Follow through on all commitments and be consistent. Not much simpler than that.

6. Don't let the change seem rare, so always have some new plans to change things around.

I hope this helps you to lead change, as leading change is difficult, especially when people are not used to it.

WARNING: Many people may tell you things you don't want to know. They will try to convince you not to change anything, and will try to get on your soft side. But, if you have a job to do and something to commit to, stick to it. Letting go of the purpose you were hired can cause you to even lose your job. Tread carefully.
