Values to achieve as a startup employee
When it comes to running a startup business, entrepreneurs want valuable employees, thus, it's only smart for employees to contain good values. When it comes to these values, though, what should you possess?
I believe, in my experience of studying other startups, that employees contain a pretty good list of values, that employers would love!
So...here they are:
1. Sense of community
Employees who have a sense of community make a great team member, or even a great team leader/captain. They also make good future managers. And definitely be communicative. Being a great communicator is important to adapt good community.
Have the opinion that "none of us are in this alone" or "nobody gets left behind". You need to feel at home while you're working. That's why this is one of the most important values to have!
2. A generally good, fair attitude
Having a good attitude is what a lot of workers go wrong, because having a bad attitude only creates bad vibes, enemies, and poor personal growth.
Make the difference in your work environment by demonstrating a good, authentic attitude and a good feeling of self-worth.
3. Joy for your job
Have you ever had a dream job? Is it even possible? Well, in the startup world, having joy can be a bit hard, if not challenging. Yes, having a dream job would be a good thing, but working in a startup can bring a lot of development to your character and skills.
Not only should you be joyful, but having a good attitude, as I discussed just above, will help you feel part of community (as stated in number 1 above).
4. Being kind and compassionate
Another set of values that people will miss is being kind and compassionate. It's all about being kind to other people, which helps you demonstrate a better attitude, and actually feel like you're part of community.
Letting everyone feel respected and cared for in the community of your workplace, will also bring the best development lifecycles, greatest company growth, and overall awesome morale.
5. Hustling your high energy
Being a high energy rockstar is what it's all about when you're working at a startup. Why settle for less than your very best? When you go to work each day, expect new challenges, greater accomplishments, and better self-worth. Because, that's what you may get when you go with the high energy workflow. Another great value to consider.
6. Perpetual learning
Learning all the time, and having a teachable heart is an awesome value to have. Not only should you be teachable, but be open for feedback. You may or may not get a boatload of constructive criticism/feedback, but don't let little issues stop you from learning and growing.
Master your skills one day, and you could go to the top of the corporate ladder. Or if that's not for you, still be a learner so you can be part of the big projects with the big boys (or girls)!
7. Have good integrity
Brand yourself to be a company rockstar, or just work hard. But, let it come natural and help people to trust you. People need to be able to trust you to do a good job. If you lack integrity, you cannot be trusted.
Be trustable, which is just as important as being teachable!
8. Be accountable and responsible
When you can trust team members to follow through, they have good responsibilities. So, team members...follow through on your projects, decisions, goals, etc. It's worth it. Make yourself known that you will get the job done well, and stick to that attitude.
Being accountable ensures dedication, responsibility, and trust. When you can be held accountable and responsible for projects, goals, etc. - you'll become better trusted, and be known to have some integrity.
9. Honesty pays off well!
A great value, always, it to be totally honest. It is the best policy after all. So, exercise some honesty, and let your job improve. After all, working in a startup is risky business, so being honest will also help the managers realize what's really going on, so problems can be solved ASAP.
10. Customer focus
Be focused on your customers. Customers are the reason why the business exists. Whether it's personal customers or business customers. They all matter. Make that extra step to have good character towards them, and keep the above values in mind. Demonstrate a good and fair attitude.
Most customers don't have a problem with the truth. What they hate is a snippy, jerky customer service representative, who doesn't handle his/her job well.
When you're going to do the projects, thinking about your customers and knowing what they want is part of the battle. It'll serve well to dedicate the fancies of your excellent work to your customers.
All in all, understand that these values can and will be very beneficial to you. When working in a startup, people will want you to work at your maximum. Do them a favor and work at your maximum, express good values, and they will probably give you an awesome reference for any future companies you would work at.
