Working Under Pressure: Not Too Hard

Picture this: You're on a stage. 500 some people watching you...you got 15 minutes to do what you do. So, what do you do?

If you weren't prepared for this speech well enough, some things like a slideshow froze up, you froze up...now you're freaking out?! How do you handle pressure-full times like this?

Your skin starts tingling, your eyes are darting back and forth - your body tenses. Being under pressure is quite extreme sometimes, and some people cannot handle it.

However, you can do this! You can handle it!

As Beilock and Carr describe it, "Pressure raises self-consciousness and anxiety about performing correctly, which increases the attention paid to skill processes and their step-by-step control. Attention to execution at this step-by-step level is thought to disrupt well-learned or proceduralized performances."

Some say telecommuting is the key to better job satisfaction, stress-free living, and higher supervisor ratings. However, is this still alive? Well of course. Would you embrace it?

Some experts speculate a better supervisor relationship can be in play with telecommuting, and thus may contribute to much better job satisfaction/security. Common Eccentric Habits of the Successful People

We commonly see "normal entrepreneurs" but sometimes it is nice to sit in to a conversation with someone eccentric, you know - weird. But, not in a bad way. There are many different ways that eccentric people work, and here is their story...

  • Shouting in employee meetings, or arguing - even when there is no need. But, what's the real idea? Extremely defending your beliefs and values and plans.
  • Confrontations - The need to call someone or an idea out. Defense of your company's ideas and business plans is how you can really keep people from messing it up. Also, some people need to hear your business plans, especially before they speculate. Of course, some simple communication is best.
  • Ruthlessness - The ability to have high standards, which is healthy. Mastery of skills can't be compromised. So, whenever somebody has something crazy to say about your business, you make the tall stance against them, because YOU ARE THE MAN (or WOMAN).

Myths about Startup Companies Resolved

Surely you've heard a bunch of myths about how a startup company works, but those with experience running a company should know that many of those myths are simply...not true.
  1. Entrepreneurship is easy. Many people think of "entrepreneur" and automatically compare it to the free life of being in a spa while working on a computer, or driving a fancy sports car to work everyday. However, that junk is for a rare entrepreneur, who seemed to create a company so large and full of impact, that now he can spend money till he's blue in the face. For the rest of us...we're just normal people.

What's sad is, entrepreneurship is far less glamorous that what people think, and if you don't take this advice then you're going to mislead yourself: don't get too excited about being an entrepreneur. It's hard work. It's physically, mentally, and emotionally draining to run a company.

Signs that you're a bad boss

Have you ever come to terms with the fact that you could be a bad boss, or maybe even a jerk? Do you play well on the team, or just overpower people?

The bigger problem is that smaller companies can be torn to shreds by one bad manager, versus a larger company may not be in such bad shape.

With few employees and one bad boss = chaotic atmosphere all the time!

In other words, one bad employee's behavior may ruin the whole team work, morale, and make a big mess on a project.

However, a bad boss can make an even bigger mess, cause a hostile work environment, and make it come hell or high water for people. A bad boss can destroy a company, destroy the values of employees, and kill the competitive spirit in the company. When this happens, you'll just be working to make money instead of actually helping customers.

What's even more complicating? They don't care.

7 Ways to Not Describe Yourself - Socially Attractive Humility

Many people make the same mistake all the time: describing themselves as something they may or may not be, and coming off as a jerk. But, the most socially attractive way to be is humble: letting people describe how you are, and give you a title.

When you give yourself titles, and try to act as though you're something, when you're not, people will flee from you. Listen up! This fake lifestyle, AKA a lie will only fly with people for so long. Sad part is, you don't notice it, until you have almost no networking. So, how do you need to stop describing yourself in 7 ways? Let's see...
  1. "Guru" or "Expert"

Now, I had to learn this myself, definitely. I once lost all of my potential networking in a previous field I was volunteering in, because of several times of calling myself an expert. I finally figured out this was happening because of my selfish attitude of "expertise" that I may or may not have had. What I learned was that I just needed to work hard and help people, and people would give me the title.

What if you don't have an exit strategy?

Have you pondered the question: "what if I don't have an exit strategy for my startup?" If you don't have an exit strategy or haven't at least pondered one, you're not ahead of the market, and thus are doomed to fail.

Not to worry, you might still have a lot of time, if you take the initiative to rescue the situation. Many startups constantly have this problem, and can lead them not having any money (and being in debt), if/when their company fails - or if they decide to sell the business/retire.

Not to discourage anyone, but something must be done if your business strategy does not include an exit strategy. Don't make the same mistake most new startups make: saying that they don't need an exit strategy because "my business won't fail". Then, a few months to a year later, they find themselves in a pickle, or lost at sea.

Are you actually LISTENING to your customers?

Businesspeople everyday want to know if they are properly interacting, listening, or engaging their customers. But, the problem most face, is with the actual analytics, market activities, and results that do not fare well that are the most problems.

Many businesspeople provide surveys and feedback forms to customers/consumers, thinking this may be the main way to actually get proper feedback. Although helpful, it is not the best way. The best way to engage & listen to your customers is through the use of correctly applied social media.

Rapid-fire tweeting/updating

Many businesspeople, in order listen to their customers will actually tweet (on Twitter) like rapid-fire to get the attention of their consumers. But, this can fail! Why? Consumers have (probably) lots of others they follow, which means that if you're cluttering up their feed with all of your "updates"/tweets, they just might unfollow you!

The one thing that can get you fired fast: overconfidence

Let's face it, friends: You're either confident, underconfident, or overconfident - which the second two can cause some problems at work. I'll highlight some major points of the dangers of being overconfident, and why it can get you fired fast.
(Which we know that with underconfidence, we can improve. But, overconfidence may make you look like a butt)

Either way we look at it, overconfidence is a way to get ahead of the game. Not only do you think you're the best one in the workplace, but you'll think ahead of yourself all the time. You're always wanting the extra hours, wanting the chance to get rich quickly, but you never show your work true to your confidence.

How to avoid hiring a "nightmare" candidate

A dream is a beautiful thing. A nightmare is something to be frowned at. So, if you're hiring somebody, wouldn't it be nice to avoid nightmare candidates? What is your strategy for new hires?

If you don't have a specific strategy when hiring new candidates, then you may be doomed to oppression for your company ( a real nightmare). So, I have a few ways to manage the atrocities of this process.

  1. It's all about how the candidate sells you in the interview.

It's fine to be the smart one that knows the company in and out. But, if you're hiring for a well-known company, this might be a bit negative or could be a nightmare if they don't know anything else (and was just faking it).

How to be happier at work

Make EVERYDAY Happy Worker Day!

Many people really want to know the true way to be happier at work, and the following should be evident to help you manage that. However, keep in mind that the tips below are not how to be happy, but how to stop doing things that make you unhappy.

Usually, people think happiness involves adding things to your life to make your life great. But, these tips are more aimed at subtracting things. In turn, it will makes things a lot less stressful. People need to bring their business dream to life, and learn some happiness while they're at it.
  •  Weed out the blaming. For starters, people make mistakes. Vendors may not deliver on time, people may not be on time with project completions, or they may not have things up to code.

However, who is to blame? Well, you can be blamed, too. Taking responsibility is highly important. Why should we worry about blaming someone? Why not take responsibility if it's your issue. If it's someone else's issue, bring it before a manager. At least that's the best way to do it.

What if you're a manager or company executive? Then, you are the one that should take responsibility. Maybe you didn't provide enough training, build enough buffer, or just asked too much - too soon. Makes sense right? We move on...

Values to achieve as a startup employee

When it comes to running a startup business, entrepreneurs want valuable employees, thus, it's only smart for employees to contain good values. When it comes to these values, though, what should you possess?

I believe, in my experience of studying other startups, that employees contain a pretty good list of values, that employers would love!

So...here they are:

1. Sense of community

Employees who have a sense of community make a great team member, or even a great team leader/captain. They also make good future managers. And definitely be communicative. Being a great communicator is important to adapt good community.

Have the opinion that "none of us are in this alone" or "nobody gets left behind". You need to feel at home while you're working. That's why this is one of the most important values to have!

Manage BIG decisions quickly

Managing your decision-making process is very important. For both personal, and for business. There are many steps to make big decisions quickly, but as you practice these steps, see if you start doing things a lot quicker in the future.

Product rollouts for my campaigns, mainly web products such as services and sites, are usually fast. That's because I plan first, and then once I'm ready to go, I'm way too eager to get the product finished and rolled-out, quickly.
