Everyone is looking for a way out, when it comes to striking circumstances. Although you'd think I'm nuts for recommending that you leave your job, this is wrong. I don't recommend leaving your job, unless is more than 2/3 of the following signs are evident. Just because there's one sign that you should leave your job, doesn't mean to go ahead and do it (then come back and blame me).
However, this is merely advice that you should consider if you want to get out of an abusive job, bad employee relationships, etc. It's just like reading symptoms of health problems: just because there's one or two signs, doesn't mean you have the condition. But, if there are more than about 2/3 of the signs evident, then you should consider a doctor visit.
This is similar. When 2/3 of the signs start being true, it's time to look for a new job. I always recommend to find a new job first, and then quit your current job. If you don't do this, you're screwing yourself over.
So here we go, top 10 hints that it's time to give up and leave your job:
1. Your job is boring or you feel unpassionate about your work.
This is number one, because how many career counselors have you heard say that you should get a job in something that you love? You really should. Don't let the thought of making money get in the way of finding a job in something that you love.
The rule is, is to do something that you love very passionately, serve people, and the money will follow after you. So, let it happen. If your job gets boring, you could start losing pay, because your performance will decline.
Don't let yourself get caught in the traps of boredom. Discipline yourself and work in something you feel truly passionate about.
2. You don't get along with most of your co-workers/colleagues.
If this happens, trouble is looming on the horizon, because you've made a few people mad, and now they're talking about you.
This starts workplace drama, you get put in the middle of it, and your job gets threatened. My advice would be to resolve the problems immediately, as quickly as possible - or get out of there while you still can.
3. You do other things except for your job.
If you're given a job or project to do, and you're busy doing other things like surfing the web, texting on your phone, or playing games - then you probably don't care, or you just don't feel passionate enough about the work (think back to number 1).
If the problem is you, and you just don't want to work, then you probably are going to be either making less money and/or losing your job soon. Performance is a common evaluation in jobs, and unfortunately, those who don't perform well enough get weeded out, AKA fired/laid-off.
If it so happens that you don't feel passionate about the job you're doing, and you'd rather do things that excite you (like play games or surf the web), then you should find a different job where you would feel more excited and be able to get work done. Not only that, work in a field that you can make more money in, if possible. So, you're not only excited, but also making more money. It's a double-win.
4. You're putting in the effort for the job, and then some - but you're not making enough money to pay your necessary bills.
We all have two types of bills: necessary and unnecessary. We commonly say: "as long as my necessities are paid for, I can be content". However, some other people think that they have to pay for unnecessary bills.
What you define as necessary and unnecessary is up to you and your passions in life. Now, if you're working your buttocks off in the job and not getting paid enough for it, or get denied a pay raise - and are not able to pay your bills...it's time for a new job or a compromise to be made. (I mean, if the boss really wants you bad enough to stay, he will agree to pay you more if you give him the ultimatum that you'll leave.)
5. You've tried too hard, but can't get along with your boss.
If you can't fix the boss-employee relationship, it may be time to move on before things get really ugly. Why? If the boss wants to, he/she may fire you, weed you out, etc.
Either reconcile with the boss, if possible, or find a new job. You won't want to be fired, because it would not leave you a chance to get a new job (therefore you'd be out of income).
6. If the leadership or management is not doing a good job, maybe you should go.
We've all seen or had to experience bad management at some point. What's the point in staying under leadership abuse? What is leadership abuse? It's what happens with horrific bosses who don't know leadership, but are called a leader/manager. They're usually hired, and usually don't have a sense of leadership skill at all. Why they got hired was probably because of credential or years of experience.
It's usually the management personnel's fault that they didn't learn leadership. Problem is: their poor leadership affects you and everybody else. It downgrades your ability to succeed.
When a manager does not know to lead people forward, it can harm the success of everybody. Usually, you can identify organizations with bad management, because they state that they have a high turnover rate.
Companies/organizations would not have a high turnover rate, if they were good to their employees, and benefited them with good leadership. Just saying!
7. Lack of sleep, your appearance is changing for the worst, and other ailments.
If you find yourself not getting enough sleep because of any of the following factors, it might be time to find a new job:
-Too many projects.
-Too many hours to work, and no work/life balance.
-Too much outside work to do at home.
If your appearance is changing, like getting bags under the eyes, and a pale skin tone - it's time to find a new job, especially one that would support your health.
Bags under the eyes are a sign of sleep deprivation, and pale skin is a sign of changes in nutrition and/or a lack of sleep, and possibly no time to spend outdoors where the sun is. We need the sun, we need sleep, and we need a healthy appearance. It just makes sense.
8. Changes in your life, such as a new baby, getting married, and other commitments.
If you have advancing commitments in your life, like a new baby, having to take care of more children, or getting married - seek a different job soon, before your stress level gets out of control.
9. Your stress level is out of control.
Yes, I just talked about this in number 8. If your stress level spirals out of control for whatever reason, and you are finding that it affects the way you treat other people, its effects on your physical, emotional, and mental health, and how much people are concerned - it's time to find a new job.
Get real with your circumstances and solve stress problems. Don't continue to let stress rule over your life, because stress is a killer.
10. The company is failing.
In essence, the company is probably failing, if you can't find enough work to do, have trouble making money, or the management is talking about closing its doors if sales/leads don't pick up.
If you have any sign that the company is failing, seek a new job before you lose your job. You can lose your job by either being laid off, or the company fails and everybody gets laid off at once.
Hopefully, these hints have made it clear on what you should do when considering your job and whether you should keep it.
