Signs that you're a bad boss

Have you ever come to terms with the fact that you could be a bad boss, or maybe even a jerk? Do you play well on the team, or just overpower people?

The bigger problem is that smaller companies can be torn to shreds by one bad manager, versus a larger company may not be in such bad shape.

With few employees and one bad boss = chaotic atmosphere all the time!

In other words, one bad employee's behavior may ruin the whole team work, morale, and make a big mess on a project.

However, a bad boss can make an even bigger mess, cause a hostile work environment, and make it come hell or high water for people. A bad boss can destroy a company, destroy the values of employees, and kill the competitive spirit in the company. When this happens, you'll just be working to make money instead of actually helping customers.

What's even more complicating? They don't care.

So, here are a few signs that you're a bad boss, and following are ways to improve and turn into a good boss that everyone respects and cares for.

  1. The boss is a politician

Politicians are political, and you should know that political managers are not cool. They pick favorites, the people who're "in". The rest of the people are out. Which means that they treat only a couple of people gloriously, and leave everyone else HIGH AND DRY. It's a pathetic way to act, because many people frown heavily on favoritism.

Start supporting all of the employees with equal credit and help them improve what they lack. Even more, you can give them incentives for special goals, and help them stay within boundaries. In this way, you're assisting them to success, so they will confide in themselves AND in you! It's a two-for-one deal.
  2. They hog all the glory

This one speaks for itself, because basically the boss is taking credit for all the awesome work the team does.

Instead of taking credit for everyone, try actually letting the person who succeeded, get the credit. Genuine praise for accomplishments is a good sign that you're being a good boss.
  3. Being a control freak

Some bosses are control freaks. They micromanage everything, which means they're "nit-picky" about a lot of things. For every foul ball, they're always in your face. But, instead of this, why not relax a bit?

But, expecting an employee to perform every task to complete perfection is like taking a drill, and drilling a hole into their head. You can't drill your employees like the military. You've got to give them space. Instead of micromanaging every little thing, have private meetings with them once a week, and let them know that you're watching their performance. Tell them that you expect a bit better results with object A or object B. Let them know how to improve...then give them some more space to improve. Update them on their progress a week or two later.

These are just examples of how you can be more relaxed in managing employees. Many employers commonly have a performance scale, in which employees are rated based on their performance. Points are given, and if you set the bar high enough, the employee with improve on their own without the help of a manager. However, if the employee doesn't reach the bar, then a meeting is most appropriate.

Also, it has to do with trust as well. Managing a certain employee is based on trust. If the employee can do a good job most of the time, then don't get on them. They just might take their awesome workmanship somewhere else and work.
  4. Yell, scream, get on people too much...just not cool...

Let's put it this way, people are HUMAN. So, yelling, screaming, and trying to get your way by extending your voice loudly will not solve as many problems as if you were to just deal with them calmly.

Intimidation is at play in a lot of workplace bosses, and it's sickening. There's no reason to try and intimidate a worker. It's much easier to sit down, get the employee's full attention, and tell them what's up rather than be on their back all the time yelling and screaming. P.S.: You look like an idiot when you do that.
So, don't be a bad boss. Bad bosses are something to be feared because that's what the boss wants: people to fear him. But, that shouldn't be the case. I would rather be respected than feared, because in the end, people will be more likely to talk to me about the problems going on in the workplace, what I can help do about them, and how we can improve the company.

Excellent company morale is the key to company success, which is why Mr. Boss better be a nicer, fair guy, instead of a jerk.
